With all the updates I've been adding to the room lately, the dresser was starting to look out of place and a little boring. I came across this interesting idea…. paintable 👏 wallpaper 👏. Strange approach or brilliant? I'm not sure (probably a little of both), but the results were BEAUTIFUL!
Materials:
Paint
Tools:
1. Remove old hardware and fill holes
I removed the hardware and wood-filled the holes since I was planning on adding new handles when the dresser was done. If you're keeping the same handles then you can skip the wood filler.
2. Apply wallpaper
I had never worked with wallpaper before and this part was fairly easy and pretty fun! I cut the wallpaper to size and followed the instructions on the package:
Soak for 5 seconds
Apply to the surface
Smooth out
Cut edges
I made sure to align my patterns with each drawer for a fluent look across the drawers.
3. Cut wood strips and nail them into place
I used a miter saw but I highly recommend miter cutters. They are much quicker, require less back and forth from the garage to the room, and are easier to measure multiple pieces. Then I nailed each cut into place, covering the edges of the wallpaper, and filled the nail holes with wood filler.
4. Sand everything
I sanded the remainder of the dresser just enough to roughen the surface so the primer had something to adhere to. I used 120 grit sandpaper.
5. Prime, paint, and clear coat!
I primed and painted everything in a color that I loved! I then added a protective coat of BEHR Polyurethane and added my favorite hardware.
*Noting that my paint came from the clearance section at Lowe's so I don't know the actual color name. I highly recommend checking the clearance paint section for little projects like this where you won't need a whole lot of paint. The whole gallon was $15 dollars and came out beautiful!
This was such a fun project and I absolutely love how it brought more character to the room. Would you try this on your old dresser or nightstand? Let me know if you do!
