Ready to give your hallway a stylish upgrade without breaking the bank? Beadboard is an easy and budget-friendly way to add character to your space. Follow this step-by-step guide to get the job done efficiently.
Tools & Materials: [EVERYTHING LINKED HERE]
Nail gun
Sandpaper
Caulk
Beadboard panels
1x4 and 1x2 boards (for framing)
Decorative trim (optional)
Wood filler
Jigsaw or circular saw
Paint of choice (I used Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams)
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Start by clearing out your hallway so you have plenty of room to work. Then, grab your measuring tape and figure out how much beadboard you'll need. A little planning here will make the rest of the project go smoothly. I was able to get away with one 4x8' sheet!
Step 2: Install the Beadboard
Cut your beadboard panels to size (measure twice, cut once!). I used a jigsaw to cut out the light switch hole, and a circular saw to trim down the boards. Attach them to the wall using a nail gun, making sure they’re level. T
ip: avoid using any adhesives on the drywall in case you ever want to remove the accent wall in the future.
Step 3: Frame the Beadboard
To give your beadboard a finished look, add a frame using 1x4 and 1x2 boards. Nail them in place, making sure everything lines up nicely. This small step makes a big difference.
I glued the top 1x2 to the larger 1x4 and nailed the 1x2 from the top, down into the 1x4---this way the top ledge was sturdy and sure to stay in place without gluing it to the wall.
Step 4: Smooth the Surface
Fill in any gaps or nail holes with wood filler. Then, run a bead of caulk along the edges for a seamless finish. Once it’s dry, give it a light sanding to smooth everything out.
Step 5: Paint the Beadboard
I picked a deep, moody color--but pick whatever color you love! Use a small brush to get into the grooves, and then roll or brush the rest. Painting took awhile to get between all the grooves, but it's worth it!
Step 6: Add Decorative Elements (Optional)
Add gold hooks, new lighting, or a decorative shelf for extra function and style. These finishing touches can make the space feel more complete.
