Transform Your Space: A Simple Guide to Creating a Stunning Accent Wall

Aubrey Booth

Creating an accent wall is a fantastic way to add character and depth to any room. Here's a friendly guide to help you craft your own stunning accent wall!

1. Choose the Right Wall

Select a wall that naturally draws attention, such as the one behind your bed or sofa. This focal point will enhance the room's overall appeal.

2. Select Your Materials

Consider materials like wood, MDF, or shiplap for a textured look. MDF is a popular choice due to its stability and resistance to warping. I used Pine for this project.

3. Plan Your Design

Sketch your desired pattern, whether it's geometric shapes, classic stripes, or a custom design. This step ensures a clear vision before you begin. I like to use painters tape to tape out the design I have in my head.

4. For this project you'll need: [EVERYTHING LINKED HERE]

  • Measuring tape

  • Level

  • Miter saw

  • Adhesive or nails

  • 1x4 pine boards

  • 1x6 pine boards

  • Paint and brushes

  • Caulk

5. Prepare the Wall

Ensure the wall is clean and smooth. Remove any nails or hooks, and fill in holes for a flawless finish.

6. Install 1x4 and 1x6 boards

I used 8-foot-long pine1x4s and decided to create a 4-foot-high accent wall to make the most of the material. To do this, I cut each board in half.

I started by installing the 1x6 board horizontally across the wall at a height of 4 feet, ensuring it was level before nailing it into place.

Next, I positioned the 1x4 pine boards vertically along the wall and secured them with nails.

helpful tip: If your wall is uneven, like mine, shims can be a lifesaver! Simply wedge the shims behind the boards to help them sit flush, nail the boards into place, and then snap or trim any excess shim material so it's hidden.

8. Ornamental Moulding for a Fun Touch

You could stop here but I loved the touch of the ornamental moulding details. I cut each piece at a 45 degree angle and wedged them inside the accent wall boxes. I used wood glue to adhere them to the pine boards and caulked every seem.

9. Caulk, Wood Fill, Paint

Once installed, I used wood filler to fill every nail hole and seam where two boards meet. Then I used caulk to fill each point where a board came in contact with a wall. I sanded the wood filler smooth and painted the wall in Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams.

I love this transformation and how the paint choice makes for a subtle accent wall--for something bold I've choose a moodier color (like Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams).

Let me know if you give this project a try! I'd love to see 😊

Happy DIYing, friends!
