How to Transform Your Garage with an Epoxy Chip Floor

Aubrey Booth

Hi friends! I’m so excited to walk you through the process of giving your garage a sleek, durable, and professional-looking epoxy chip floor. This project is surprisingly approachable and totally worth the effort. Your garage will not only look amazing but also have a tough, resilient surface that can stand up to heavy use. Let’s dive in!

What You’ll Need [EVERYTHING LINKED HERE]

  • A 2-part epoxy coating kit

  • Garage floor cleaning solution

  • Cement filler (if your floors are cracked)

  • Colored chips (for that decorative touch!)

  • A paint long handed paint roller and brush (as recommended by the epoxy manufacturer)

  • Pressure washer

  • A high-quality putty knife

  • A mixing container for the epoxy

Step 1: Pressure Wash the Garage Floor

The first step is all about preparation and is the most important step to follow for long term durability Use a pressure washer with a heavy-duty floor cleaning solution to thoroughly clean your garage floor. Be sure to follow the instructions on the back of the solution. This will remove dirt, grease, and grime, giving you a clean slate for the epoxy to stick to.

Step 2: Scrub and Clean

Once the floor dries, go back over it with a scrub brush and more cleaning solution. This ensures no residue or hidden contaminants are left behind. The cleaner your floor, the better the epoxy will adhere.

Step 3: Fill Any Cracks

Next, grab a high-quality putty knife and use cement filler to repair any cracks or imperfections in the floor. This step is key to creating a smooth, even surface for your coating.

Step 4: Mix the 2-Part Epoxy

Now it’s time to prep the star of the show: the epoxy! Follow the instructions on your kit to mix the two components thoroughly. Use a mixing container and stick, and make sure to wear your safety gear for this part.

Step 5: Apply the Epoxy

Once mixed, it’s time to apply the epoxy to the floor. Using a long-handled roller, start in a corner and work your way out of the garage to avoid painting yourself into a sticky situation. Apply it evenly and take your time! This step is much like painting a wall.

Step 6: Add the Chips

While the epoxy is still wet, sprinkle the colored chips onto the surface. There’s no right or wrong way to do this—add as much or as little as you like for a look that’s uniquely yours. I bought extra chips :)

Step 7: Let It Dry

Patience is key here! Let the epoxy cure according to the manufacturer’s recommended drying time. Don't rush the clock here.

Step Back and Admire Your Work!

And that’s it—a successful garage makeover! Not only does the new epoxy chip floor look amazing, but it’s also incredibly durable and ready to handle whatever life throws its way.

I’d love to see your transformations! Share your before-and-after photos in the comments below, and let me know how your project turned out.

Happy DIYing, friends!
